Patient Workflows & How Technology Solves Individual Health Challenges

May 18, 2026

The Blooming Day 2026 session, Patient Workflows & How Technology Solves Individual Health Challenges, featured two influential voices in healthcare innovation:

  • Andy Slavitt, Co-Founder and General Partner at Town Hall Ventures and former Acting Administrator of CMS under President Obama

  • Chethan Sathya, MD, VP of Strategic Initiatives at Northwell Health and pediatric trauma surgeon

Together, they explored how AI is transforming care delivery for underserved communities. Throughout the conversation, one message stood out clearly:

“We shouldn’t just allow access to care — we should be able to give people access to really high-quality care.”

The future of healthcare is not just about scaling outreach. It’s about using technology to close care gaps and improve care quality.

AI Is Expanding Human Capability — Not Replacing It

One of the strongest themes from the discussion was that AI works best when it strengthens the people already delivering care.

Slavitt pointed to how AI tools are helping clinicians, community health workers, and non-clinical care teams rapidly increase their knowledge and effectiveness:

“We’ve basically given the ability of physicians and non-physician clinical teams — and even non-clinically trained teams like community health workers — to upskill their knowledge really dramatically.”

This shift has major implications for healthcare access. Rural communities in particular can see massive benefits as Dr. Cethan Saytha explained,

“There's so much as physicians that we do that we think we have to be there in person to offer that exceptional care. But the ability... to provide primary care in rural American communities is huge."

Rural and underserved populations often face provider shortages, fragmented systems, and barriers to timely care.

AI can help close those gaps by giving frontline workers faster access to information and decision support.

Rather than replacing human care, AI can amplify it.

Healthcare Is Becoming Blended, Connected, and Continuous

Another major takeaway from the session was the idea that healthcare delivery is rapidly evolving into a connected ecosystem.

According to Slavitt:

“Healthcare is becoming and will quickly become some combination of home, community, technology, virtual, inpatient, outpatient — it’s all going to blend together.”

This blended future requires more than standalone digital tools. It requires coordinated workflows that connect healthcare systems, social care organizations, community partners, and patients in real time.

AI can serve as the connective layer across those systems by:

  • identifying unmet needs,

  • triggering timely interventions,

  • personalizing outreach,

  • and helping organizations respond faster and more proactively.

For vulnerable populations, that coordination can make the difference between falling through the cracks and receiving meaningful support.

The Path Forward

AI presents healthcare organizations with a rare opportunity: the ability to improve both efficiency and quality simultaneously.

When implemented responsibly, AI can:

  • empower frontline teams,

  • strengthen patient engagement,

  • improve access in underserved communities,

  • reduce administrative burden,

  • and help organizations deliver more proactive, personalized care.

The future of healthcare is not about replacing human relationships. It’s about scaling them.
